The Devil's Interval
SPOKEN INTRO:
Behold the musical interval known as the tritone,
also known as, "The Devil's Interval".
If you embraced the tritone,
you could write a song,
a toxic skull and crossbone,
satanic, vile and strong,
and what a thrill to hear the demon's sing along.
Like Devo's Jocko Homo,
or Jimi's "Purple Haze"
or Ludwig B's "Fidelio",
you'd set their ears ablaze,
cacophonizing madly as it plays.
This exercise in dissonance
our soul compels us do,
with sour notes in rakish cadence
clashing two by two.
Like nails across the chalkboard
or classic goth by Tull
we crave that flattened fifth chord
as we abhor the sweet and dull
when we're ringing out that devil's interval.
This exercise in dissonance...
You can hear those tritones
in an English cop car's wail
schrieking out like death moans
from a cursed, death-row jail
waiting for that crucifixion nail.
