The Curse of the Mojo Hobo
Through the sweltering heat of the delta,
beneath an ominous, thundercrack sky
at that desolate crossroad he knelt and
kissed sweet redemption goodbye;
but then he rose like a hoodoo enraptured,
with charisma and skill and desire
unchained from his soul newly captured
like a Phoenix sprung fresh from the fire.
He wore the curse of the Mojo Hobo,
beneath the wails of the Heavenly Host,
crowned with an antichrist halo
in cahoots with the Unholy Ghost.
He went out busking the swamps of the Yazoo
before every street corner shop,
astounding those folks of the bayou
for any spare change they might drop,
yeah he raved like a mad, gypsy drifter
carousing by floozies and booze
always the legend, the grifter,
raging like wildfire news.
He wore the curse of the Mojo Hobo...
But a jealous lover laced his whiskey with poison
and at that fork where he brokered the deal
he surrendered his soul to the demon
though his legend like thunder still peals.
'Cause every kid with a second hand dobro
and every punk with a pawn shop guitar
longs that crown of the black magic halo
like the rings from an agent's cigar.
They court the curse of the Mojo Hobo...
